Merck Serono recently announced the European marketing authorization of Kuvan® for the treatment of hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) 4 years and older and in patients with BH₄ deficiency. Previously the only therapy for HPA was strict dietary control in order to avoid foods with phenylalanine (e.g. meat, fish, nuts, dairy products and some vegetables and fruits) associated with daily amino-acid supplementation. Kuvan® is the first and only approved pharmaceutical formulation of BH₄ in Europe to effectively treat hyperphenylalaninemia in PKU or BH4 deficiency. Kuvan® is intended for administration in association with active dietary management. It underscores Merck Serono’s commitment to offering innovative solutions to patients suffering from high unmet medical needs.

Merck Serono was a pioneer in making recombinant human growth hormone available for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency in children and adults. Saizen® is indicated in children and adults for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency, as well as in children born small for gestational age (SGA), with Turner Syndrome or chronic renal failure. Recombinant human growth hormone is also used to treat patients suffering from HIV-associated wasting (Serostim®) and for the treatment of short bowel syndrome in patients receiving specialized nutritional support (Zorbtive®).Merck Serono continues to bring benefits to patients through these treatments and its family of easy-to-use drug delivery devices.
